Periodontal Care
Our dental practice specializes in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of gum disease and other periodontal issues. Periodontics is the dental specialty focused on caring for your gums and jawbone. To become a periodontist, a dentist must attend additional training.
Your gums play a very important role in your oral health. They surround your teeth, anchoring them in place while protecting and supporting your jawbone. Proper care and treatment are important to help maintain your periodontal health.
Issues Requiring Periodontal Treatment
Most issues with the gums start out as gingivitis, which is inflammation of the gums. But as it progresses, it becomes a serious issue. Gum disease will progress and deteriorate your gums if you don't address the issue. If left untreated, you could lose your teeth. Signs of periodontal disease include:
- Redness
- Swelling
- Gum pain
- Bleeding gums
However, you might not notice any issues, which is why it’s important to see a dentist regularly. Gum disease forms from bacteria in plaque laying near the gumline. With time, the infection from gum disease can deteriorate your jawbone, which can lead to losing a tooth.
Your dentist might recommend periodontal treatment if you have any of the following issues.
- Gum disease: when gum disease becomes moderate to severe, it's time for treatment. At the first signs, your dentist might recommend improving your oral hygiene. But once the issue advances, you'll need treatment.
- Gum recession: if infection starts leading to gum recession, you’ll need treatment. Gum recession can be caused by gum disease or from vigorous brushing with a hard-bristled brush. Gum recession can spread if left untreated.
- Before lengthening a crown: to lengthen a crown, a periodontist might need to remove some gum tissue to expose more of the tooth.
- Recontouring: ridge augmentation, which is also known as recontouring, helps even the gumline. Before proceeding with this operation, your dentist will remove any infection or gum disease from the area.
If your gum issues are mild or in the earliest stages of developing, Dr. Guller’s first goal will be to treat the source of infection. Once the infection is treated, he will review healthy oral hygiene habits with you to prevent future infections.
If gum disease continues to progress, you might need a deep scaling treatment. This helps remove plaque and tartar to prevent further infection. When gum disease is advanced to the point of jawbone regression, your dentist will use intensive bacteria cleaning methods and remove any teeth that are too loose to save.
Our office also provides implants to restore teeth you’ve lost to periodontal disease. This can help keep your mouth functional and comfortable after tooth loss.
Patients with concerns about gum health should call our office immediately. The longer periodontal issues are left untreated, the worse the consequences will be.

"A little over three years ago, my older daughter Carolyn, had a bicycle accident. One of her permanent front teeth was actually knocked out. We called the office and they told us to come in immediately. It was about 6 p.m. Everyone was concerned and helpful. Dr.Guller reinserted her tooth. Needless to say, we were very frequent visitors to this office. Everyone knew us and always asked how Carolyn was doing. With everyone’s long-term help, Carolyn’s teeth look great!
Our entire family comes to Pascack Dental Arts. It’s a great place for complete dental care."
