Endodontic/Root Canal Dental Care Bergen County NJ
When the nerve of a tooth decays, experiences severe trauma or gets infected, you might need root canal therapy. This therapy saves your tooth by removing the pulp and nerves from the tooth. We then fill the space with a medicated dental material to ensure there is no more infection present and no new infection can grow.
While no one really wants a root canal, it’s much better than tooth extraction as it saves the natural structure of your tooth. Extracting a tooth can cause problems for nearby teeth and requires more involved restoration services, such as an implant.
Most root canal treatments are successful and allow you to keep your natural tooth long-term. Rarely, the tooth is so infected that we cannot save it.
Root Canal Signs and Symptoms
You might need a root canal on a tooth if you experience any of the following symptoms. Always consult your local Bergen County NJ dentist if you have oral discomfort.
- Abscess of the gums
- Hot and cold sensitivity
- Acute toothache
- Swelling or tenderness near the affected tooth
Why Your Dentist Might Recommend Root Canal Therapy
- The tooth pulp (tissue inside the tooth) is decaying
- The root of the tooth is infected or there is an abscess inside the tooth
- Severe tooth injury or trauma
What’s the Process for Root Canal Therapy?
The root canal procedure only takes one visit to your dentist, though you might need to return for a crown. Here’s the process for a root canal.
- The dentist numbs the tooth and surrounding area
- The dentist creates an access point at the top of the tooth
- The dentist removes the pulp, infection and nerve tissue from the tooth
- The dentist removes any part of the tooth that has decayed
- The dentist thoroughly cleans the tooth
- The dentist fills the tooth with a permanent filling
You’ll return for another appointment for a crown to protect the tooth and prevent breakage. After your root canal therapy, you might have some tooth sensitivity. As the inflammation goes away and the tooth begins to heal, that sensitivity should subside.
Oral pain and discomfort are not something you want to live with.

"A little over three years ago, my older daughter Carolyn, had a bicycle accident. One of her permanent front teeth was actually knocked out. We called the office and they told us to come in immediately. It was about 6 p.m. Everyone was concerned and helpful. Dr.Guller reinserted her tooth. Needless to say, we were very frequent visitors to this office. Everyone knew us and always asked how Carolyn was doing. With everyone’s long-term help, Carolyn’s teeth look great!
Our entire family comes to Pascack Dental Arts. It’s a great place for complete dental care."
