Amalgam Fillings
Amalgam fillings are silver and can help restore a tooth when it is decayed. Your dentist will start by removing the decayed part of your tooth and replacing it with amalgam.
Composite fillings tend to be favored over amalgam fillings since they match the color of the tooth. Amalgam fillings tend to only be done on back teeth since they are far less visible than front teeth when you smile. But if you need a filling, you can discuss the best solution with your dentist to choose the material that will be right for you.
Why You Might Need an Amalgam Filling
- Your teeth are cracked or broken
- There is decay in one of your teeth
- Teeth are worn
- Previous fillings are cracked or broken, needing to be replaced
What’s the Process for Getting an Amalgam Filling?
Your dentist can place an amalgam filling in one appointment. Here’s a step-by-step look at the process for these fillings.
- The dentist will numb the area
- Your dental health team will remove the decayed part of your tooth
- We’ll clean the tooth and prep it for the filling
- Dr. Guller will fill the space with the amalgam filling
- We’ll shape and polish the filling to make it feel great alongside your other teeth
For a few days following your filling, you might be sensitive to hot and cold. With time, this sensitivity will subside.
Oral hygiene practices are important for keeping your filling looking and feeling great. Make sure to continue to brush and floss. You should also visit a dentist regularly for an exam and cleaning where they will check the wellbeing of your fillings and any other restorations.

"A little over three years ago, my older daughter Carolyn, had a bicycle accident. One of her permanent front teeth was actually knocked out. We called the office and they told us to come in immediately. It was about 6 p.m. Everyone was concerned and helpful. Dr.Guller reinserted her tooth. Needless to say, we were very frequent visitors to this office. Everyone knew us and always asked how Carolyn was doing. With everyone’s long-term help, Carolyn’s teeth look great!
Our entire family comes to Pascack Dental Arts. It’s a great place for complete dental care."
