Composite Fillings
Composite fillings are matched to the color of your existing tooth. We use these fillings to repair cracks, cavities, fractures and chips in your teeth. To do this, we first remove the affected portion of the tooth. Then, we add the composite filling.
Dentists have many options for materials to fill teeth. However, the two most popular are composite and amalgam. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. The best part about composite fillings though is that they look great since they match the color of your teeth. This is especially preferred when operating on front teeth or teeth that are visible when you smile.
No matter the material your dentist uses to fill a tooth, it is not permanent and will likely need to be replaced in the future. However, composite fillings are extremely durable. With proper care, they can provide function and protection for several years.
What Composite Fillings Treat and Repair?
- Teeth with chips
- Broken or cracked teeth
- Teeth with decay
- Heavily worn teeth
- Closing large gaps between teeth
What’s the Process for Getting a Composite Filling?
Our team can complete a composite filling with just one visit to our office. Here’s a look at the process for completing a composite filling so you know what to expect from your visit.
- Your dentist will numb the area if needed.
- The dental team will thoroughly clean the area to prepare it for the new filling.
- For repairs near a tooth’s nerve, we’ll add medication to protect the area.
- We’ll add the composite filling material to the tooth.
- Then we’ll shape and polish the tooth to match its original function and beauty.
You might have some discomfort shortly after getting a filling. However, after a few days, your sensitivity to heat and cold will subside as the tooth gets used to its new filling.
The final part of your appointment will be our team explaining how to care for your teeth. Patients who care for their teeth well experience fewer cracks and issues with teeth that have been restored.

"A little over three years ago, my older daughter Carolyn, had a bicycle accident. One of her permanent front teeth was actually knocked out. We called the office and they told us to come in immediately. It was about 6 p.m. Everyone was concerned and helpful. Dr.Guller reinserted her tooth. Needless to say, we were very frequent visitors to this office. Everyone knew us and always asked how Carolyn was doing. With everyone’s long-term help, Carolyn’s teeth look great!
Our entire family comes to Pascack Dental Arts. It’s a great place for complete dental care."
