My spouse has mentioned that I have bad breath at times and I am self-conscious about this. What can I do? Is it from my mouth or my stomach?
I wish I could give you a definite answer, but without examining you I can only give you some general information on the topic which I hope will be helpful.
In general, oral malodor will most commonly have it’s origin in the mouth rather then the stomach. Very often bad breath is related to periodontal disease or gum disease. It may also be a result of certain foods such as cheeses, garlic, onion or strong spices as well as dry mouth. Additionally, poor fitting dental appliances and faulty crowns, bridges and even fillings can catch food which allows bacteria levels to build up and in turn cause an odor. If the condition is persistent as opposed to intermittent, it is a good idea to speak with the dentist and/or hygienist and have your gums checked for swelling and breakdown. Very often a series of deep cleanings alone will do the trick along with excellent care at home. Be sure to also clean the tongue properly and if necessary ask your hygienist about a tongue scraper if bad breath persists and have the dentist and hygienist check for “food traps” around teeth and dental work.
